Hayrettin Filiz

Hayrettin Filiz was graduated from Dokuz Eylül University Faculty Of Fine Arts, Dramaturgy Department in 1988. His first play “İşte Bir Hamlet” was performed by the acting department students of his faculty. The play was directed by an expert director, Mehmet Büyükağaoğlu.

He just watched, read and gathered all his thoughts until 1998. In the season between 1998-1999, he presented Lenz’s “Suçlular Çağı Suçsuzlar Çağı” with the theatre group of TMMOB Association of Mechanical Engineering. Same season, he established two theatre groups with children with Melih Özakat Primary School and SHÇEK Bornova Dormitory For The Homeless Boys. He presented “Açıkgöz Budalalar” with Melih Özakat Primary School and “Gılgamış” with Dormitory. These performances took place on every performance hall in İzmir. “Gılgamış” became the first paid child theatrichal performance in AKM as a surprise.

Hayrettin Filiz became the Responsable of Child’s Theatrichal Performance in Uğur Mumcu Centre of Art and Culture after all this achievement. He sum up his ideas which verify that this success was not a chance and notices that theatrichal acts and education must be started from the bottom; under the name of “Bilimsel Tiyatro Atölyesi”. He started writing plays for children to generalize and prove his ideas, to show that BTA is a cultural behaviour. In the season between 1999-2000, he presented 10 theatrichal performances, 8 of them was theatrical performances for children, and 2 of them was for adults spectation. He presented “Kırmızı Balon” From Lamorisse, “Don Kişot” from Cervantes, “Ermişin Köpeği” from Buzatti, “Küçük Prens” from Exupery, “Lastik Papuçlar” from Zoşçenko, “Şişkolarla Sıskaların Savaşı” from Maurois, “Sevgilerle” from Jean de la Fontaine and the first original play of BTA named “Kurtuluş Savaşı Destanı” in Uğur Mumcu Center of Art and Culture. He also presented a theatrical classic with MMA Theatre Group, “Leonce & Lena” from Büncher and the comedy “At” from the Hungarian writer Gyula Hay. In the season between 1999-2000, he announced that Bilimsel Tiyatro Atölyesi was established on the day he performed “At” with the assistants he trained (May 22, 2000). He reached 212001 spectators with 91 performs of 10 plays in the season. He released the first part (First Tenets) of BTA Manifest which he announced his ideas to Turkey with a program of principles.

The manifest was paid attention with the never told radical opinions, like “Child Tragedy” and “Theatre must be implemented into the education programme”. The accuracy of these ideas has been discussed in many meetings and panels. The panels with the attendance of National Theatre and Faculty of Fine Arts have been watched by different people and associations. Same year, First “Özdemir Hazar Theatre Award” whose winners are chosen based on public opinion poll was given to Hayrettin filiz.

In the season between 2000-2001, BTA presented 13 new theatrical performances of children. Hayrettin Filiz continued studying on practices which supported his ideas and presented “Şahmaran” that based on our natural culture like, “Gülibik” from Çetin Öner, an original fairytale “Altın Armut” and another original BTA performance “Bis Bis”. He also brought the international literature to children with performances like “Palto” from Bertolth Brecht (This was the first meeting with children of a Bertolt Brecht work), “Edison’s Life” (with the support of Edison Society in America), “Küçük Üçkağıtçı” from an expert of Swedish literature Wernström, “Dev Adam Güliver” from Irish writer Swift, “Kitap Okuyan Öküz” from French writer Marcel Aymé, “Akılsız Çocuğun Hikayesi” from Russian writer Tolstoy, “Pal Sokağı Çocukları” from Hungarian writer Molnar and “Bir Tilki Nasıl Devlet Başkanı Olur?” from German writer Goethe. The performances which took place for 95 times in that season reached 22419 spectators. Same year “Edison” was translated in English.

Hayrettin Filiz started the season early, between 2001-2001 and again with a pioneer act, he carried “Öğretmen Duyuşen” from Kirghiz writer Cengiz Aytmatov on the stage with the same title (27.11.2001). By inviting Kirghiz research assistants who live in Turkey, he asked for their opinions. Same season, the play was conveyed to Belgian ambassador Cengiz Aytmatov and also translated in Kirghiz language.

At February 2, 2002; BTA established their own stage for its practices in Bornova and carried on their activities there. Same season, they were on the stage in front of spectators in İzmir with 14 children and 1 adult performers and at the same time, some BTA plays were performed in Batman, Akhisar, Silopi and Zonguldak. BTA spent the season, between 2002-2003, for the introduction programme included our national writers and writers from international literature who were known little and performed stories from Voineşti, the Czech writers Haşek and Çapek, Russian writer Uspenski based on this issue. With the same reason, BTA started a new programme named “writing for children, books and writers’ history.

For the purpose of leading a cultural movement and for the aim of creating its own director, dramaturg, and actor; BTA started giving chance to its students who are ready to be on the stage with the “student-director” technique.

BTA, created its own stage, with 51 seats which has extracted from an old Russian ship, with a tiny control panel and 7 spot lights. BTA staged a lot of theatrical performances from this date: “Papağan Davası” (Haşek), “Pampala' da Savaş Hazırlıkları” (Kruss), an original text “Sait Faik”(it’s performancing continualy since first staged), “Adam Olan Tavuklar” (Halikarnas Balıkçısı), “Ume” (Niva Fumio) , “Palavracı” (Voineşti) , two original performances Mevlana ve Köroğlu, and after Elma Ağacı... Then, “Yıkılış” (Vahdettin Tragedyası) and the first essay of poem and performance “Ömer Hayyam” came.

The BTA's who closed the first independent season (2002-2003) with 13 different plays with the leading of Hayrettin Filiz, razed another wrong tradition. On the contrary of what was supposed, education was not only around teachers and students, but it collated also with family, environmental and school. Thus, the culture of childrens' theatre spread around the community with an associating and organizing mission. During this process, the basic principles were proved right once again: suitability to age, support of the pedagogy science, and right perception with the right expression.

Starting with 54 students, BTA reached 350 students a year after (2003-2004), another year after (2004-2005) to 680 students. BTA, which was started to be seen as if it was a school, continued its unique plays. Damdaki Keçi (Zoşçenko) , Küçük Kara Samed, Gülen Ayva Ağlayan Nar Kumpanyası (Sait Faik), Kukuraça (Dumbadze), Fareler ve İnsanlar (Steinbeck), Ölü , Sabah Olmadan, Bibersapı Köy Kadınlarını Kalkındırma Derneği (Şişkov) , Orhan Veli (Anma Oyunu) , İnek Meydan Savaşi (Zarp) , Sacco İle Vanzetti (Fast).

The season of 2004-2005 was important for BTA to prove that the inheritance they left to the subculture was a right one. Uğur Uzunel who attended as a "student director" earlier, became one of BTA's directors after directing two plays one after another (Komik Bir Hastane Öyküsü /2004/ - Kırmızı Balon/2005/). Nowadays, Serkan Satlık, Senem İlmiye Büyükkılıç and Sinem Koşar are oozing with sweat as the student directors of subculture.

The season 2004-2005 was a more dynamic season; the plays of Kerbela, Nuh , Moliére, Yıldızlara Bakmak (Köy Enstitüleri' nin 65. Kuruluş Yıldönümüne Saygı Oyunu) opened many doors for both play writings of Hayrettin Filiz and for BTA on its road to become a leading organisation. Now, BTA has made its own viewers and achieved permanence. Now, whether in the region or in most places of the country, Hayrettin Filiz's plays are being played and BTA who is getting prepared for it's 6th official season, have taken into their repertory the plays as Karanlıkta Islık Çalmak (Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı), Afife Jale, Yeşil Kumandan (Çerkez Ethem).

72 plays of Hayrettin Filiz who has 83 plays in total were brought to the viewers. Winning 43 awards with these works, this famous writer's play was translated and played in Macedonia, Skopje last year.
Hayrettin Filiz is still writing.
